In flannel, grams per square meter (GSM) matters more than thread count. Budget flannel often sits between 100 and 150 GSM; a genuinely premium sheet usually starts around 170 GSM and can go higher. The heavier fabric traps more air, which creates warmth without the stiffness that comes from simply stacking more cotton fibers onto the roll.
Fiber Quality
Long-staple cotton, or a carefully chosen premium blend, produces a smoother surface and fewer loose fiber ends. Short fibers shed and pill faster. Truly high-end flannel sheets specify the fiber source and staple length; budget options frequently hide behind a generic "100% cotton" label.
Brushing and Napping
Double-napped is the term to look for. It means both sides of the fabric were brushed, and the brushing was done with enough passes to create a fine, even nap. A properly napped flannel surface feels velvety and insulates against the cold; a poorly brushed one feels rough and becomes matted after a few washes.
Weave and Dyeing
Twill-weave flannel is generally more durable than plain-weave flannel because the diagonal structure distributes abrasion across a wider area. Dyeing also separates premium from budget. Reactive or vat dyes bond at the fiber level and withstand repeated washing, while pigment prints sit on the surface and fade or crack over time.

Full-perimeter elastic is another reliable sign: it holds the sheet taut across the whole sleeping surface instead of allowing the corners to lift.
Stitching quality matters just as much. A reinforced hem with consistent tension prevents fraying after repeated washing, and the seams should be neat with no loose loops on the underside. Even the best double-napped flannel loses its loft if washed incorrectly. Wash flannel in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low and remove the sheets as soon as the cycle finishes so the fibers are not cooked in the drum.

- Ask about pre-shrinkage and the maximum shrinkage percentage the mill guarantees.
- Measure your mattress depth and compare it with the fitted sheet pocket depth.
- Read the care label for washing temperature and tumble-dry limits before you buy.
- Request pilling and colorfastness test data from the brand or supplier if it is a B2B order.
Thread Count Is Misleading for Flannel
Because flannel is carded and brushed, the fibers stand away from the weave, and thread count stops being a useful metric. A 200-thread-count brushed flannel feels completely different from a 200-thread-count percale sheet. Standardize on GSM and brushing quality instead, and treat thread count as a secondary detail.
Sourcing High-End Flannel for Retail or Private Label
